Laxman keen to bat higher up the order
Wednesday 08 June 2011

Veteran Indian batsman VVS Laxman has expressed his desire to bat higher up the order during the Test series against the West Indies. With the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir missing the tour, the stylish Hyderabadi wants to take on the responsibility of batting up the order.

"I will love to bat higher in the batting order but it again depends on the pitch conditions and the strategy we have for that particular Test," said Laxman.

The 36-year-old left for the Caribbean on Tuesday and is the vice captain of the side and the right hander is proud of being the second in command.

"It is a proud feeling to be the vice captain. I have always tried to give my best in the interest of the team," he revealed.

The Windies might not be the force they once were, but Laxman believes they cannot be taken for granted. And India will have to be on their guard if they want to remain the number one Test side in the world.

"No Test team can be taken lightly. West Indies could be inexperienced but they are a very competitive side at home," he said.

"We will try to do what we have been doing over the last three years - train hard, play to our potential and then continue the winning spree abroad. And this time, it will be no different on the West Indies tour.
