Leaving Chris Gayle out of the West Indies squad was always going to be a bold decision. But the home side’s miserable form against India in the ongoing series has once again brought Gayle’s ouster into the limelight.
The Windies lost the first ODI by four wickets to an inexperience Indian side with their batting proving to be a real cause for concern. And middle order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan believes that the team is missing the class of someone like Chris Gayle.
"Frankly, you miss his presence. But selectors have given us a team and we have to try to and do our best. But the spirit of the team is high and we are only going to get better," Sarwan said after the four-wicket loss yesterday in which India chased down a modest 215.
The burly Jamaican has been in superb form lately, suddenly finding his touch for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.
Despite his splendid form Gayle was left out of the squad for the first two ODIs, but Sarwan’s comments and the home side’s less than impressive showing just might be enough to convince the West Indies Cricket Board and Gayle to bury the hatchet.
