Indian cricket selectors get a big pay raise
Thursday 09 August 2018

The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has approved a hike in the fee of the selectors by Rs 30 lakhs, and that of the chief selector by Rs 20 lakhs. It was decided that the remuneration of the members of the selection committee be increased to Rs 90 lakhs per annum (from Rs 60 lakh per annum), while the chairman of the panel will now get Rs 1 crore (gets Rs 80 lakh per annum).

Currently, the senior selection committee is headed by former India wicketkeeper MSK Prasad, with Devang Gandhi and Sarandeep Singh being its other two members. Gagan Khoda and Jatin Paranjpe were removed as selectors last year as the Lodha reforms mandate a three-member selection committee, all of whom, should have played Test cricket.

Meanwhile, the remuneration of the members of the junior selection committee has been increased to Rs 60 lakhs per annum, with the chairman of the panel now supposed to get Rs 65 lakhs per annum.

The salaries of the women's selection committee too have been increased, with the members now getting Rs 25 lakhs per annum, and chief elector set to receive Rs 30 lakhs. Interestingly, the minutes mention that "the CoA was informed that before the above increase could be communicated to the selectors, some of them had approached the acting secretary (Amitabh Choudhary), seeking an increase in their remuneration.

In view thereof, the acting secretary had asked Saba Karim (General manager of cricket operations at BCCI) for a comparative analysis of the increase in remuneration fee of team India's support staff and (India A coach) Rahul Dravid since FY 2014-15. After going through the same, the acting secretary had recommended a further increase of approximately 70%."

The CoA, however, decided to stick to the remuneration approved by it. The two-member panel, headed by former CAG chief Vinod Rai and including former India women's captain Diana Edulji, had earlier doubled the fees of all the BCCI umpires, curators, scorers and video analysts, besides increasing the feel of international and domestic cricketers.
