BCCI states mull appeal against CoA
The state units met in New Delhi to discuss the way forward after the CoA’s directive on office-bearers’ tenures
Around 12 cricket associations affiliated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) met in New Delhi on Sunday to discuss the way forward after the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) issued a directive to all BCCI-affiliated associations to submit the names of office-bearers/governing body/managing committee/working committee who have completed nine years before March 1.
The Vinod Rai-led four-member CoA have taken the decision despite the lack of clarity from Supreme Court orders passed on January 2, 3 and 20.
The BCCI units met their lawyer Kapil Sibal on how to put forward their concerns before the apex court.
“The meeting was called to discuss the confusion prevailing with regards to tenures. We will appeal to the honourable Supreme Court to clarify the disqualifications criteria. This is a genuine confusion for which we want a clear directive. The COA has already acted upon despite lack of clarity,” said a former official present at the meeting.
The other issue which the BCCI units want to raise strongly in the apex court is the decision to bar the BCCI office-bearers from attending the IPL auction in Bengaluru.
On the eve of February 20 auction, the COA stumped the BCCI by disallowing senior vice-president CK Khanna, joint-secretary Amitabh Choudhary and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry from attending the auction since the issue regarding validity of the undertakings filed by them is still pending before the Supreme Court.
Only IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla and Dr PV Shetty were allowed to attend the IPL auction on strict understanding/interpretation of the disqualifications in terms of the various orders issued by the Supreme Court.
During Sunday’s meeting, BCCI’s ‘former’ bigwigs raised an issue on why the COA has allowed the BCCI staff, who are over 60, to continue despite the Lodha Committee’s directive to bar administrators above 60. It is learnt that the BCCI units will appeal to the Supreme Court to issue a directive on it.
Meanwhile, during Saturday’s marathon meeting of the COA members at the BCCI headquarters, it is learnt that the COA has agreed to look into the issue of a hike in salary for BCCI staff, which hasn’t materialised for the past couple of years. It also looked into all the administrative issues and urged the staff to cooperate in implementing a system in place.
