BCCI under National Sports Development Bill?
Sunday 27 December 2015

In view of the corruption charges against Delhi and District Cricket Association and its former president Arun Jaitley, the sports ministry is keen to bring the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) under the purview of the National Sports Development Bill.

As the BCCI continues to neglect the government's Sports Code, the sports ministry has called for a meeting with BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur to discuss the board's current position on two of the Sports Code's most contentious clauses – Right to Information (RTI) Act and age and tenure guidelines.

With the Supreme Court ruling that the BCCI is a public body and that its actions are open to judicial review, the sports ministry is taking serious measures to tighten its noose around the BCCI.

Among other things, the ministry would also discuss the 'Prevention of Sporting Fraud Bill, 2013' with the BCCI officials during the meeting in the wake of the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The bill is pending approval of the Cabinet.

The ministry is likely to convey to Thakur and other board representatives that a working group under the chairmanship of retired Justice CK Mahajan is preparing a revised draft of the Sports Code to bring about suitable amendments to its relevant provisions.
